Arena di Verona: Nabucco and Aida

2011.07.09~10  Arena di Verona

From Milano, we took the train an hour or so east to the World Heritage site of Verona, home of Romeo & Juliet. Walking around is a time machine–you are transported to a romantic age. The Arena is a round outdoor stage where mobs of people attend the famous summer Opera sessions. Every corner echoes the fabulous voices wonderfully from 9 to 1.

The first night, we saw Nabucco (Verdi’s first big hit, about Nebuchadnezzar), which contains a song Italians find patriotic, and which they cheered and even demanded an encore.

The second night was Aida but in the last tragic act, a typhoon-grade wind blew in, accompanied by lightning–very dramatic–and about half the crowd headed for the exits. We barely made it home before it started teeming, probably just as the opera was over on stage.
